Deepavali Visesha Nayivedyam / Diwali Festive Delicacies

Recipes Cooked, Photographed and Written by Praveena

Deepavali / Diwali is the most popular festivals of Hinduism, celebrated across the globe. Though its commonly known as ‘festivals of lights’ the real essence of this festival is ‘victory of light over darkness’, good over bad, knowledge over ignorance. The word Deepavali / Diwali itself means ‘row of lights’, as per the Ancient language of Indian called SANSKRIT. This festival falls on the Amavasya (No Moon night) of Aswayuja Masam or the Pournami (full moon night) of Karthika Masam. But, it is celebrated for 5 days starting from Dhanatrayodasi/Dhanteras to YamaDwithiya .

Deepam/Jyothi/Lamp is referred to as ‘Deepa Lakshmi’, which means its the source of wealth, interms of Spiritual as well as Traditional aspects. On this day, special pooja is offered to Maa Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth and prosperity) and special food offerings are also being given. Fire Crackers are burnt during early mornings and post sunset of these 5 days, marking the victory of Rama over Ravana, Krishna over Narakasura, Good over Bad, Truth over Evil.

My kids are extremely fond of Deepavali, mostly for the deepavali brightness, rangoli, special pooja, delicious sweets and fire crackers. They just keep waiting for the sun to set, so that they can burn the fire crackers. These days, residing outside India doesn’t affect the celebration of any Indian festivals. Because, every festival is celebrated with the same devotion and faith by Indians throughout the globe. 🙂

Here, I’m sharing with you, only the special festive delicacies (food offering) I prepared on this auspicious day.
