Chana dal, also known as split Bengal gram or split Chickpea lentils, forms the base of this chaat, providing a protein-rich and nutritious foundation. With the addition of a medley of spices, fresh vegetables, and sweet chutney, this chaat becomes a perfect balance of textures and tastes.
I made it last week and we all just adored it for its simple ingredients, spicy tangy taste and healthy veggies it has.

Ingredients:
- Chana dal / Split Yellow Chickpea Lentils – 1½ cups (after boiling)
- Coriander / Cilantro Leaves – ¼ cup (finely chopped)
- Mint Leaves – ¼ cup (finely chopped)
- Fresh Green Chillies – 4 (medium)
- Onions – ½ cup (finely chopped)
- Tomatoes – ½ cup (finely chopped)
- Carrots – ½ cup (grated)
- Lemon / Lime Juice – 2 tablespoons
- Sev / Aloo Bhujia – ½ cup
- Chaat Masala Powder – 2 to 3 teaspoons
- Kashmiri Chilli Powder – 1 teaspoon
- Salt / Black Salt – as per taste
- Sweet Tamarind Sauce – 3 tablespoons

Step Wise pics Procedure for ‘Boiled Chana Dal Chaat / Spicy Indian Lentil Snack’:
Prep Work:
As part of the prep work, getting the chana dal cooked is most important.
You can cook the Chana dal either on Stove Top (or) in an Instant Pot. I have given both the methods, so check accordingly.
Stove Top Method to Cook Chana Dal:
Wash the chana dal 2 to 3 times. Take into a sauce pan, pour 3 cups of water, cover with lid so that only ¾th of pan is closed. Let them cook on stove top under high flame for 15 mins. The lentils should not be over cooked, they have to a bit crunchy.


Instant Pot Method to Cook Chana Dal:
Into the Instant Pot vessel, add the washed chana dal. Pour water such that they are just soaked. Close the lid, set mode to PRESSURE COOK, pressure level to HIGH, time to 4 MINS, valve to SEALING. Later, release the pressure naturally.


Gathering the Ingredients:
Get the chana dal cooked. Gather all the ingredients at one place. Finely chop the coriander leaves, green chillies, mint leaves, tomatoes, onions.

Making Chatpati Chana Dal Chaat:
Into a wide mixing bowl add all these>> boiled chana dal, chopped tomatoes, onions, green chillies, coriander leaves, mint leaves, salt, chaat masala powder, kashmiri red chilli powder.



Tips & Storage:
- Adjust the salt & spice as per your taste.
- This simple dish can be served as a snack/appetiser/for light dinners too.
- You can even add green chutney along with the sweet tamarind chutney. But, it tastes excellent even without adding any of those.
- Storage: This, Healthy Indian Chana Dal Chaat, stays best only when prepared fresh and eaten fresh.
- Optionally, you can boil the chana dal, store it in fridge, thaw and use it when you make the chaat.

- ¼ cup Coriander / Cilantro Leaves (finely chopped)
- ¼ cup Mint Leaves (finely chopped)
- 4 count Fresh Green Chillies (medium) (chopped)
- ½ cup Onions (finely chopped)
- ½ cup Tomatoes (finely chopped)
- ½ cup Carrots (grated)
- 2 tablespoons Lemon / Lime Juice
- ½ cup Sev / Aloo Bhujia
