Why to make Indian Curry Recipes without Onion and Garlic?
In some Indian cuisines, particularly in certain traditional religious or spiritual practices like Ayurveda & Sattvic Diets, onions and garlic are excluded from recipes for various reasons like:
Ayurveda Principles: An ancient system of medicine and healing, classifies foods based on their qualities, tastes, effects on the body. Onions and garlic are considered “rajasic” and “tamasic” foods, respectively, means they increase restlessness, passion, aggression in the mind (rajasic) and promote dullness, laziness, ignorance (tamasic).
Sattvic Diet: In Ayurveda and ancient spiritual practices, a “Sattvic” diet is encouraged for its focus on foods that promote clarity, purity, and balance in the mind, body. This diet emphasizes fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts while excluding pungent and stimulating foods like onions and garlic.
Non-Violence, Aversion to Strong Odours: Some sects of Jainism, and other spiritual practices advocate for non-violence (ahimsa) towards all living beings. Onions and garlic are believed to contain more “life force” or “prana,” and their strong smell when chopped is considered disruptive, potentially harmful.
Cultural and Regional Practices: In regional Indian cuisines and family traditions, the avoidance of onions and garlic might be a cultural practice passed down through generations especially for offerings during Festivals. pooja.
Ultimately, Indian cuisine is incredibly diverse, and you can find a wide range of recipes to suit various dietary and cultural preferences.
