Ugadi or Samvatsarādi or the festival of Ugadi is the New Year’s Day for the people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and  Karnataka states in India.

It is festively observed in these regions on the first day of the Hindu calendar month of Chaitra (in late March or early April of the Gregorian calendar). In simple words it is the beginning of a new Hindu Lunar Calendar.

As per South Indian Cuisine, special festive foods are prepared on the day of Ugadi.

Typical dishes belonging to Ugadi day / Ugadi festival recipes are mainly the Ugadi pachadi, Mamidikaya Pulihora, payasam, vada and Mamidikaya pappu.

Out of which the most special food is the Ugadi Pachadi.  

The recipe of Ugadi Pachadi is a traditional South Indian recipe containing raw mangoes, neem flowers, tamarind paste, black pepper powder, salt, new jaggery. 

​It is a no cook, instant, pachadi having 6 different tastes matching the different emotions of human life.

On the onset of spring, the neem trees have a full blossom of neem buds, having a bitter taste and so these are used as part of Ugadi Pachadi recipe for their amazing health benefits.
